When Should I Replace My Water Heater?

Several signs indicate it is time to consider replacing your water heater. If any of the signs below apply to you, be sure to give Precision Air a call and one of our Portland HVAC and water heating specialists can help with a new water heater installation right away.

  • Your Water Heater is 10+ Years Old

Most water heaters will need to be replaced around the 10-year mark. Depending on how well you maintain your system, you may be able to get more usage out of it. However, regardless of how well you take care of your system, you will need to start planning for a new water heater installation soon.

  • Rust is Present

Any rust or corrosion on your water heater unit is typically a sign that a replacement is needed. Once a water heater starts to rust, little can be done to repair it. Rust is most often a sign that a leak of some kind is present. It is best to talk to one of our water heater installers if you notice rust or corrosion.

  • The Drain Valve Fails to Drain

Have you noticed a ‘popping’ sound coming from your water heater? With gas models, in particular, this noise usually indicates that sentiment build-up is present. Both gas and electric models are susceptible to build-up over time. Regularly flushing your water heater once a year can remove sediment and prevent damage. If the drain valve reaches a point where it no longer drains, a new water heater installation may be necessary.

  • Your Water is Cold or Lukewarm

If you can’t seem to get any warm water or it takes forever for your water to heat up, a new water heater may be the only solution. It is possible that certain parts can be replaced in this instance to restore your hot water, so be sure to ask our water heater experts about possible repairs.

  • Repairs are Common

If you constantly have to request water heater repair services, it may be time for a complete water heater replacement. While water heater repairs may be necessary every so often, they shouldn’t be a frequent occurrence. Ask one of our water heater specialists about a replacement today.
